This blog is perfect for you if you want to know how to make your extensions last as long as possible, or you can send the link to your clients. Whether you have nano tip extensions, weft extensions or invisible injection extensions - these aftercare tips are key.
Your hair extensions can last a long time if you are careful and look after them. Because our hair is real Russian hair, and also the highest Remy quality - if you look after it, it will last so much longer. An important point to remember is that Blonde extensions always require more maintenance than darker shades.
Hair extension basics…
Unlike natural hair, hair extensions don’t have a direct supply of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, which means that they of course require more love and care than our own natural hair - and also means that so understandably they will require more maintenance and aftercare than your own natural hair. This also means that they do have an end lifespan, as they will always eventually become brittle and damaged from use - however you can help really slow down this process.
For long-lasting extensions, avoid frequent washing. We'll show you the proper way to cleanse them...
As with natural hair, washing as little as possible is often best for helping our extensions feel and look their best - but everybody is different with how often they want or need to wash their locks!
Make sure you use high quality products - don’t spend big bucks on extensions to just use sub-par shampoo on them! The best way to wash your hair with extensions is in the shower, allowing the water to flow down your hair. It might feel easier to flip your head over the bath to clean it quickly, this makes your extensions much more prone to tangling, so when you’re brushing out the knots after it’s not much of a time saver. It’s also key whilst washing to not put conditioner near your roots otherwise you can cause your extensions to slip. It’s also important to rinse your hair properly.
Regular brushing babe!
When you have extensions installed, it’s so important to plan some brushing time into your daily self-care routine throughout your day. You will also want to give yourself an extra five minutes each evening to brush your hair well and to put it into a protective braid before you go to sleep.
When you’re brushing your extensions, it's so important to be gentle! Since professional extensions are attached to your natural hair, pulling them can lead to pulling out your own hair. We recommend starting at the bottom and brushing slowly upwards, while holding the top of the extensions to avoid excessive pulling.
Treat yourself once a week…
Your extensions don’t have a direct link to nutrients like your real hair, you need to restore that moisture. Use a deep conditioning mask once a week to keep your locks strong, healthy and shiny. Using conditioning products throughout the week is also important to generally keep a level of softness to your extensions.
Heat protection
We all know by now that heat is one of the worst things for our natural hair so of course it’s no different for our hair extensions. If we use excessive heat it can cause our hair to become dry and/or damaged, and this is particularly true of blonde extensions as they have already been through a process. Always use a good quality heat protection spray when blowdrying and styling your hair - this is good practice even when you don’t have extensions in.
It’s also good to remember that heat damage isn’t just from styling tools. The sun and warmer climates can cause damage too. You can use pretty scarves, cute hats or UV protection spray to minimise damage in these scenarios.
Don’t sleep with wet extensions!
You cannot ever sleep with wet extensions. This will cause tangled or matted roots, as well as increasing the chances of your extensions falling out. Our hair is at it’s absolute weakest when it’s wet, so sleeping on both our natural hair and extensions can cause huge damage from the pressure of tossing, turning and any pulling in one particular area whilst you are in dreamland. This also means extra brushing and detangling in the morning - which is not only damaging but annoying! Even if you are careful whilst brushing out those knots, you will be putting a lot of pressure on where your extensions attach, pulling on your scalp and loosening any bonds.
